"The east window of my mothers bedroom seemed different somehow when I began the painting "Henriettes' Window" this past March. The pearl gray jalousies had usually been open, revealing a vase or pot of flowers on the inner sill. The painted design framing the outer window had once been a pale lemon yellow outlined in gray.

Now the jalousies were closed, with only a few of the louvers slightly open into the darkened room. The outer design had faded into peeling white paint.

My mother, Henriette Wyeth, died in early April, just as the bed of daffodils and tulips beneath her window had begun to loose an early bloom. "  Michael Hurd - October 1997
